Lucy and Elektra is the name of the 10th edition of Elektra, an International Digital Arts Festival presented in Montreal between the 1st and the 10th of May 2009. Lucy travels between performances, installations and the different venues Elektra lives in. When she's there, the camera follows her.
The physical manifestations of Lucy's emotions are captured and transmitted, they influence the website as well as the venues.
A Symbian Nokia cellular phone was used for transmitting the biometrics and the AV stream to the server. A piezo elastic belt was taking the respiration data while the hearth beats were captured by the electrodes of a Polar T31-C belt and then transmitted via electromagnetism to a hearth-rate monitor for impact and vibration filtering. The biometrics were then sent to an Arduino micro-controller for formatting and then were transfer to the cellphone via Bluetooth so they could finally be pushed to the server.
Streaming for a long period of time via cellphones can be a little hazardous as it is very demanding for the batteries. Also, if you try such project, make sure you get a cellphone that can connect wirelessly to a stable network. Forget about 3G for such a project.
